The Conservation of Matter

Material research and exploration of raw materials and waste byproducts of the brick industry.

Composed of unfired paintings and sculptures highlighting various aggregate materials left behind by the brick industry and my own artistic practice, this series of work examines opportunities for creative reuse and reduction of waste.

Sand, stone, and mineral impurities are separated from local clay deposits prior to use before being thoroughly washed, color sorted, and crushed to various sizes. Along with brick waste and kiln slag gathered from the site of former brick plants, these resources function as coarse pigments which are mixed with binders to achieve a crude painting medium.
